Kampung Kecil Tulamben
Our Story
Why Tulamben?
The Magic Beneath the Surface and Beyond
When we first dreamed up Kampung Kecil, we knew we needed a location that spoke to the soul. We weren’t looking for the bustling nightlife or crowded beaches of the south. We were searching for a sanctuary—a place where the rhythm of the ocean sets the pace of the day, and where Bali’s raw, natural beauty takes center stage.
We found all of that, and so much more, in Tulamben.
Located on the quiet northeastern coast of Bali, resting under the watchful gaze of the majestic Mount Agung, Tulamben is a place of profound tranquility and hidden wonders. But if you’re wondering “Why Tulamben?”, here is exactly why this sleepy fishing village captured our hearts and became the home of Kampung Kecil.
A Gateway to Underwater History
Tulamben is globally celebrated by scuba divers and free-divers for one massive reason: the USAT Liberty Shipwreck. Just a few steps off the rocky volcanic shore lies one of the most accessible and magnificent shipwrecks in the world. Torpedoed during WWII, the ship now serves as a vibrant artificial reef teeming with life—from schooling jackfish and bumphead parrotfish to intricate pygmy seahorses. The fact that you can simply walk into the ocean and explore history is nothing short of magical.

A World-Class Canvas for Macro Life
Beyond the wreck, the nutrient-rich volcanic black sand makes Tulamben a paradise for “muck diving.” It is a treasure trove for underwater photographers and marine enthusiasts. On any given day, the waters reveal incredibly rare and bizarre marine life: colorful nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, and the ever-elusive frogfish. It’s a constant reminder of how diverse and surprising nature can be.

The Serenity of the “Real Bali”
While the underwater world is spectacular, the topside experience is just as important to us. Tulamben retains the charm of a traditional Balinese village. Here, time moves a little slower. There is no gridlock traffic—only the sound of roosters in the morning, the gentle lapping of waves against the pebbles, and the warm, genuine smiles of the local community. It is the perfect antidote to the stress of modern life.

Dramatic Landscapes and Sunrises
There is something incredibly grounding about the contrast of the sparkling blue ocean against the stark, sparkling black volcanic rocks of the shoreline. Waking up early in Tulamben is a rite of passage. Watching the sunrise paint the sky in hues of pink and gold, with the ocean completely still and Mount Agung towering behind you, is an experience that stays with you long after you leave.

Our Home, Your Sanctuary
We chose Tulamben because it represents the very best of Bali: adventure, natural beauty, rich culture, and profound peace. At Kampung Kecil, we wanted to create a space that honors this incredible environment. Whether you are here to log your 100th dive, experience the ocean for the first time, or simply read a book with the ocean breeze on your face, Tulamben provides the perfect backdrop.
We fell in love with Tulamben, and we can’t wait to share its magic with you.
